Pete Alonso is now just nine home runs from tying Darryl Strawberry for the New York Mets’ all-time club home run record, and 10 from taking the title.

The first baseman was one of four Mets hitters to homer in a 13-5 win over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday afternoon at Coors Field, with Alonso and Jeff McNeil each hitting two dingers, while Brett Baty and Francisco Alvarez each hit one, and Juan Soto reached base six times. Tylor Megill earned the win and right-hander Paul Blackburn pitched out of the bullpen for the first time this season, going four innings for a save.

The Mets (42-24) completed a season sweep of the Rockies, finally getting the big offensive game they’ve been looking for, but it was Alonso who moved up in the record books with both of his home runs.

Alonso’s first home run tied him David Wright for second all-time in franchise history, and with his second, he took sole possession of second place. In the top of the third with the Mets up 2-0 and Soto on second, right-hander Chase Dollander threw a 1-1 cutter that didn’t quite cut the way it might have if it wasn’t for Coors Field’s altitude. Alonso drove it 416 feet to left-center field, giving the Mets a 4-0 lead.

Tyrone Taylor‘s RBI double off Dollander in the same inning made it 5-0. Dollander (2-6) finished the inning, but wouldn’t return for the fourth, finishing with five earned runs on eight hits, walking one, striking out three and being charged with an error trying to pick off Soto.

The Rockies (12-53) went to right-hander Juan Mejia, but he wasn’t any better.

Up 5-0 in the fourth, McNeil hit his second of the game and sixth of the season, a three-run shot that gave the Mets an eight-run lead. Colorado got two back in the fifth, but the Mets kept going. Baty hit a two-run home run off right-hander Seth Halvorsen in the top of the seventh.

With the Mets up 10-3 in the eighth, right-hander Tyler Kinley tried to go inside to Alonso with a fastball. The slugger turned on it, sending it over the left-field fence for another two-run blast. He has 17 on the season, and his average is up to .301.

Alvarez hit one in the ninth, a strong sign of a turnaround for the catcher that has struggled to hit the hard stuff this season. It was a 93.5 MPH cutter from right-hander Zach Agnos right over the plate, and Alvarez didn’t miss and didn’t mistime it.

Megill struck out the side in the first inning, setting up a solid start. He ran into trouble in the fifth, and the Mets used Blackburn to spare a bullpen that has covered a lot of innings in recent days in their final game before a much-needed off-day. In a tough place to pitch, Megill handled the challenge well, keeping Colorado hitless over the first four innings before allowing two earned runs on three hits in the fifth. The big righty walked three and struck out five in the win (5-4)

This was always going to be the summer of Alonso given how close he was to reaching Strawberry’s record. Now, the countdown is now officially on when it comes to becoming the Mets’ all-time home run king.
