Tigers tame Giants behind Jack Flaherty's pitching, Riley Greene's offense
Published in Baseball
DETROIT — Tarik Skubal, nine scoreless innings on Sunday.
Keider Montero, five scoreless innings Monday.
Jack Flaherty, virtually unhittable for six innings Tuesday night.
The Tigers are making that old saw about momentum being only as good as today’s starting pitcher ring true.
Flaherty’s gem helped the Tigers to a third straight win, beating the San Francisco Giants and their ace Logan Webb, 3-1, at Comerica Park.
And make no mistake, Flaherty spun a beauty.
He established arguably the best four-seamer he’s had this season early. Not only was the command precise, he was getting extra ride on it. The induced vertical break was 18 to 22 inches, up from his season average of 16 inches.
With that spotted at the top and bottom of the zone for strikes, he was able to use his knuckle-curveball and slider extremely effectively.
He got five whiffs on 11 swings with the knuckle-curve, seven whiffs on 25 swings and 13 called strikes with the four-seamer.
Flaherty struck out eight and walked one. The only hits were leadoff singles in the first and second innings. He set down the final 11 hitters he faced and left to a standing ovation from the crowd of 21,092.
He left with a three-run lead.
Right-hander Chase Lee put up zeros in the seventh and eighth. The Giants got on the board in the ninth with an RBI double by Wilmer Flores off righty Will Vest, who earned his seventh save.
Riley Greene did the heavy lifting for the offense with three hits and a pair of RBIs.
He scorched a two-out double to the wall in right-center to bring Gleyber Torres all the way around from first. The ball left his bat with an exit velocity of 114.5mph.
It was the Tigers’ MLB-leading 122nd run scored with two outs.
Greene singled home Colt Keith in the third after Keith drove a triple into the right-field corner.
Greene also doubled with two outs in the fifth.
Wenceel Perez, who was activated off the injured list before the game and made his season debut, hit the third pitch he saw and drove it over the right-field wall.
That was all the damage Webb allowed in six innings. He struck out 10, getting nine whiffs with both his change-up (15 swings) and sweeper (12 swings).
The Tigers are 36-20 on the season, best in the American League, and 20-8 at Comerica Park.
