Gadgets: A great audio company
Published in Science & Technology News
Campfire Audio, based in Portland, Oregon, is an audio company that you need to be familiar with. I’ve tried many of their products over the years, and each impresses me from top to bottom. The last I tried were the Iris and Axion wired earbuds.
A little about Campfire Audio: They have been producing first-class audio products since 2015. They call themselves a small team of audio lovers who created more than 70 different in-ear monitors, along with cables and accessories. Once you have their audio playing in your ears, you’ll understand how good they are.
The Iris was launched late in 2025 as an entry-level hybrid-designed in-ear monitor for everyday listening. For those wanting to get into high-fidelity audio, or as Campfire says, “dipping their toes into hi-fi for the first time,” the Iris was designed for you. They have a rugged, yet elegant design featuring a transparent 3D-printed acrylic housing with stainless steel accents.
Campfire’s Iris ($349) delivers sound just as expected, with clarity to the highest levels in each ear from premium 10mm ADLC dynamic drivers. Listening to them for hours delivered nothing but quality sound with any playlist, at any volume. Every tune and sound was balanced and just kept me wanting more.
Campfire’s high-quality metal cables are included, along with a folding storage wallet and three sets of foam, silicone, and high and clear ear-tips. You also get a cleaning tool and a cleaning cloth.
Another solid choice from Campfire Audio is the Axion, built with their first-of-its-kind silicon dynamic driver. This was designed to let the Axion compact body deliver the rich, impactful sonic character found in dynamic drivers.
The Axion has a more on-the-go setup, with sound that's just as clear, with a good amount of bass at both high and low volume levels. Comparing them to the Iris, if I had to choose one, I’d take the Iris. But if I had never heard the Iris, the Axion sounded smooth and natural, with everything I would want out of my playlists. To challenge these thoughts, I had several friends test them, and none wanted to give them back -- that said it all.
The body of the Axion ($249) is also eye-catching, like the Iris, with a transparent acrylic/internally dyed housing and gold PVD stainless accents. Campfire designed them to be worn like any other earbuds or flipped and worn over the ear, similar to an in-ear monitor.
They have a high-quality, plug-and-play custom USB-C cable with an inline microphone and button controls for hands-free calls and music playback. The cable provides improved fidelity and power to your earphones.
The included accessories are a mesh zipper carrying case, a two-pocket mesh bag to fit an earbud on each side, three foam ear-tips, three silicone ear-tips, and a cleaning tool and cloth.
There are differences between the models, but both offer first-class development and a solid construction with all the accessories you’ll need. Campfire is an impressive company that delivers top-notch quality and protection under a 2-year manufacturer's warranty.
