Da Brat and wife received death threats for using white sperm donor during IVF

Rapper Da Brat and her wife, Jesseca “Judy” Dupart, have revealed they received death threats for choosing a white sperm donor during their IVF journey.
The Atlanta-based couple, who married in 2022, told People magazine that backlash over their decisions around conceiving their son, True Legend, reached a fevered pitch, with some critics even wishing death to their unborn baby.
“We received death threats, people told us things like we should miscarry,” Dupart told the outlet.
Da Brat, whose real name is Shaunte Harris, said such violent threats were even more hurtful considering she miscarried before having fertility success with True.
“It broke my heart,” the “Funkdafied” rapper shared of the loss. “But I wanted to try again. Thank God I didn’t quit or give up.”
Despite difficulties due to “all those IVF hormones,” True was born in 2023, making Da Brat a mom for the first time at age 49.
As far as their controversial decision to choose a white sperm donor, Dupart explained that it wasn’t based on preference, but came after standard genetic screening revealed limited options: “Only about 3% of donor sperm is from Black men,” she said.
During a 2023 episode of their WE TV reality series, “Brat Loves Judy,” the couple revealed why they didn’t select their only Black option for a sperm donor out of a shortlist of 300 people.
“That [dude] looked like Jiminy Cricket,” Da Brat said. “I was like, ‘I’m sorry but that wasn’t gonna be my choice. … But I think we did a great job with picking. [The donor is] handsome, he’s tall and I think he’s going to look beautiful with my wife’s egg.”
She later apologized for the offensive remark.
After decades of rumors, the trailblazing rapper came out in March 2020, explaining that Dupart pushed her to embrace her true self.
“She’s the person who completes me,” Da Brat said. “She gives me courage. She inspires me, and she makes me fearless. She makes me not afraid.”
