Television Q&A: Will Amazon Prime show return to 'Night Sky'?

You have questions. I have some answers.

Q: Hi! We found “Night Sky" with Sissy Spacek and loved it, but there is only one season. Will there be more? It left us hanging!

A: The science-fiction series starring Spacek and J.K. Simmons as a couple with a connection to another planet was canceled in 2022 after a single season on Amazon Prime Video. (You can still see it there.) “Launching to largely positive reviews, the series did not make a significant viewership impact while carrying sizable costs tied to its sci-fi content,” said Deadline.com at the time. But it also noted the historic impact of the series: “Prime Video, in conjunction with Amazon Web Services, SES, and Intelsat, beamed the show’s first episode into outer space, marking the farthest distance from Earth that a TV series has been distributed and making Prime Video the first streamer to distribute its content directly into space.”

Q: Do you know when “I Can See Your Voice” with Ken Jeong is coming back? I really enjoyed it.

A: I’m not expecting a return of the musical-mystery game. While there hasn’t been a cancellation announced, it is not listed in Fox’s plans for this summer or for the upcoming 2025-26 season. The very busy Jeong will have a new gig on Fox this fall, as co-host with Erin Andrews of the premiering game show “99 to Beat.”

Q: Are the “Chicago” shows (“Med,” “Fire” and “P.D.”) filmed in Chicago?

A: In a world where Canada often fills in for U.S. locations in programs, I can understand your asking this. I can also assure you that those series are made in Chicago. You can even see some of the real-life locations when visiting Chicago, including the firehouse and police headquarters in the show. One place to find out more is on the Choose Chicago website.

Q: I am just finding out that “Poppa’s House” has been nixed for next season. Is there any chance this gets picked up by another network or moved to Paramount+? It was one of the few comedies that had me and my wife truly laughing out loud.

A: According to Deadline, the series starring Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr. had respectable ratings but still smaller ones than CBS comedies “Ghosts,” “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” and “The Neighborhood,” which were all renewed. That left one slot for a comedy on the network and CBS decided instead to pick up the new series “DMV.” A workplace comedy set in a department of motor vehicles office, it is slated for “Poppa’s House” time slot on Monday nights.

I’ve not seen anything about “Poppa’s” getting a new home, and the senior Wayans’ thank-you to the show’s makers and fans ended with “on to the next chapter, with nothing but love in my heart.”

And another visit to the department of audience peeves:

Q: When an actor is drinking from a bottle or cup, you can tell that they are pretending. Why do they pretend instead of actually swallowing a liquid?

A: This came up in an earlier column, but I didn’t talk about why this happens. It’s a production issue. Having real liquid, especially a hot one, adds to the risk that an actor will swallow wrong and choke a bit, or accidentally spill the drink; either action can mess up a scene and force a time- and money-consuming retake.
