BOSTON — It could be a double weather whammy for Bay Staters this weekend.

Ahead of some downright brutal temps and wind chills, parts of the region may see several inches of snow.

The National Weather Service’s Boston office has issued a “Winter Weather Advisory” for much of Massachusetts — where widespread amounts of 2 to 4 inches of snow are expected through Saturday.

Localized bands of heavier snow across northeast Massachusetts could deliver up to 8 inches of snow in Essex County, including Cape Ann, where NWS issued a “Winter Storm Watch.”

Up to 6 inches of snow will be possible on the Cape and Islands.

Roads across the region will get slippery, and travel could be “very difficult,” according to the National Weather Service.

The period of moderate to heavy snow is expected to be from late Saturday morning into the afternoon.

Following the snow, it will be dangerously cold from Saturday night into Sunday. Gusty winds will lead to brutal wind chills — from around 10 below zero to 30 below zero.

The National Weather Service has issued Extreme Cold Warnings.

“As we continue to monitor the extreme cold weather, we want everyone to be prepared and plan accordingly, especially residents and visitors who may have plans to travel for the big game on Sunday,” Gov. Maura Healey said in a statement. “We advise you to use extra care on the roads and take the time to check in on your neighbors to make sure everyone stays warm and safe.”

“We’re no strangers to the cold, but with this arctic blast, it’s important to take caution to avoid conditions like hypothermia and frostbite, which can occur in just 30 minutes of exposure to these temperatures,” said Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll. “Bundle up in layers of clothing, limit time outdoors and try to stay active while you’re inside.”

MassDOT Highway Districts pre-treated state roadways ahead of the storm, and was set to deploy snow removal crews and equipment to clear state roadways. Drivers are encouraged to use caution and reduce speed, as snow may cause slippery roadway conditions.
