Erik Menendez has required multiple surgeries for complications related to his kidney stones, forcing his hospitalization just weeks ahead of his scheduled appearance before a parole board that could free him from prison.

His daughter, Talia, in an update shared on social media Wednesday night, revealed that Menendez had just undergone his second operation in the days since he was rushed from a San Diego prison to the hospital. She added that he will need a third “due complications with both kidneys having multiple large kidney stones.”

“Because Erik is in prison, there are often complications and delays with medical care, so this continues to be a very stressful time for us as you all can imagine,” she wrote. “He is currently in pain and feeling nauseous, but is recovering.”

Menendez’s attorney Mark Geragos previously said he’d been diagnosed with a “serious medical condition” and called for his immediate release.

Menendez, 54, and brother Lyle Menendez, 57, have been behind bars since 1996, when they were sentenced to life in prison for the 1989 murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez.

Both men became eligible for parole earlier this year, after they were resentenced to 50 years to life by a judge who determined they would not pose an “unreasonable risk” if they were released.

The brothers have long claimed they were abused by their parents. They said they were acting in self-defense when they gunned down their parents in their Beverly Hills home during an argument sparked by Lyle confronting their father for abusing Erik.

During each of their high-profile trials, prosecutors alternatively contended the men committed the killings so they could collect their multimillion-dollar inheritance.

Their parole hearing is scheduled for Aug. 21 and 22.
